Stroke
Benefits From Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment
- Saturation of plasma can nourish tissues even in the absence of RBCs
- Reduces platelet aggregation and increases RBC deformability, decreasing the viscosity of blood to supply more 02 to tissues
- Relieves brain edema by vasoconstriction
- Improved metabolism of neurons to reduce swelling
- Neubauer and END (1980) used HBOT in 122 stroke patients in both acute and chronic stages. Of the 79 patients treated with HBOT, 65% reported improvement with quality fo life, even 5 months to 9 years post stroke. HBOT patients had a roughly 40% shorter hospital stay than non-HBOT patients.
- Takahashi et al (1992) showed Neurological recovery with only slight disability in 1 of 10 subjects, versus 6 out of 9 in the HBO-treated group.
- Isakov et al (1981) treated 140 patients with HBO following ischemic stroke. 80% of patients noted satisfactory improvement.
